How Build A Solid Relationship With Your Vendors

October 7, 2016

Relationships matter in business. For designers, business success requires forming strong ties with their customers as well as vendors (fabric suppliers, embroiders, dye houses, etc.). A solid, lasting client-vendor relationship can prevent many mishaps that might affect the manufacturing process. But, forging successful relationship with vendors requires time and effort.

Here are some ways to build an unbreakable bond with your vendors:

Negotiate prices rationally

There’s no question that prices need to be negotiated. But, it’s also necessary to understand that vendors need to make money. When negotiating pricing, do it respectfully and rationally. If both you and the vendor are happy with your partnership, you can enjoy years of success together.

Treat them the way you want to be treated

Provide your vendors the same level of respect that you would want. Engage in a clear, professional manner.

Stay in touch with them

Communication is key in designer-vendor relationship. Communicate clearly and effectively, on a regular basis. This will also give you regular feedback on production. Try to speak to them at least every two weeks (or more if possible).

Although email is convenient and quick, it’s not as personal as a phone call. Take the time out of your busy schedule to connect with your vendor over the phone or even pay them a visit.

Be open, honest and thorough

Explain everything thoroughly. Be honest, open and specific with them. Don’t leave out any details, no matter how small. Don’t leave anything open to interpretation.

Also, if they have mess up, don’t be afraid to tell them. Ask them to fix the issue.

Gratitude matters

Last, but not least, thank them for a good job. A sincere thank-you goes a long way in forging lasting ties. It doesn’t even cost anything.
