Creating an Apparel Sample – Some Tips

July 31, 2017

From helping designers create the perfect fit to instructing production sewers, there are many functions an apparel sample serves.

Whether the arms do not fit nicely or the design is a bit off, samples help you minimize problems before you mass produce your designs.

We at Lefty Production Co. offer the below tips:

Know the Purpose of Your Apparel Sample

From using it at a runway show to employing it as a sales tool, there are many purposes for your apparel sample.

Most times, it is used to assess your first fit. If that’s the case, you need to make sure that your sample can be scaled up and down in size without compromising your fit.

Keep Taking Body Measurements

You should continuously take body measurements and check how design fits into the shape of various bodies.

What’s more, you should also understand that not all types of garments fit the same way. This process is an experimenting phase, so you can try out different sample sizes and types.

Design a Flat Sketch

As part of the creative process, it is very important that you get things down on paper. A flat sketch just requires a pencil and a paper and consists of simple lines without any shading or coloring. This will give you an outline on a 2D interface.

After this, you can add lines to represent seams and stretches. This will make it easy for the patternmaker to create beautifully stylized patterns that match your vision.

Keep all the Supplies Organized

From fabric to trims, it is important that you keep all your supplies organized in the sample production room.

This will keep you focused and help you avoid mistakes. Being organized also pays as you make revisions in the process.
